The five day How to Prepare Massachusetts Financial Statements Class will be conducted as follows:

  • Combined Balance Sheet, Two Days, May 8 and 21, 2015
  • GASB 34/54 Fund Statements Two-Days, June 10 and 11, 2015
  • GASB 34/54 Government Wide Statements (1 day only), Sept 18, 2015
at the Longmeadow Fire Station. This class is offered to municipal and school officials and private sector individuals and related staff that desires a basic course in preparing financial statements. The first two days (May) develops the knowledge and a template to produce the Combined Balance Sheet for Free Cash or E&D Certification. The third and fourth days (June) finalizes the Combined Balance Sheet and develops the template for the GASBS No. 34 eight Fund Perspective statements. The fifth day (September) is to work on the two Government Wide Statements and the Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A). This is not an overview class on how to read the statements; this is a how to do it class using combining and combined spreadsheets to prepare these statements. Bring your trial balances and laptops to these workshops.

With SAS 112, it is important for you to have a working knowledge of your financial statements. This class will teach you how to prepare your Combined Balance Sheet using Excel templates to complete it for the fall filing. Then you will learn how to tweak the Combined Balance Sheet to prepare your GASB 34 Fund Perspective and Government Wide Statements. By preparing these statements, you will have the template and the knowledge to prepare these statements in subsequent years, while reducing your audit fee permanently going forward.

This class will cover:

Day 1 and 2 Department of Revenue Reporting

  • Combined Balance Sheet
  • Free Cash and E&D Certifications

Day 3 and 4 GASBS No. 34 Fund Statements Reporting

  • GASBS No. 34 Fund Perspective Statements
    • Governmental Funds balance sheets, Statement of revenues, expenditures and changes in fund balances, and the Budget to Actual Comparison statements
    • Proprietary Funds Statement of Net Assets, Statement of Revenues, Expenses and Changes in Net Assets, and Statement of Cash Flows
    • Fiduciary Funds Statement of Fiduciary Net Assets and Changes in Fiduciary Net Assets
    • Reconciliations to the government wide statements

  • Overview of GASBS No. 34 Government Wide Statements
    • Statement of Net Assets
    • Statement of Activities
  • Overview of Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A)
