The remaining sessions for the How to Prepare Massachusetts Financial Statements Class will be conducted on September 21 and October 13, 2011 at the Needham School Administration Building. This is a three-day class is offered to municipal and school officials and private sector individuals and related staff that desires a basic course in preparing financial statements. The first day help develops the knowledge and a template to produce the Combined Balance Sheet for Free Cash or E&D Certification. The second day (September) finalizes the Combined Balance Sheet and begin to develop the template for the GASBS No. 34 eight Fund Perspective statements. The third day (October date) is to complete the Fund Statements. We will also discuss the two Government Wide Statements and the Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A). Day 3 will be scheduled later. This is not an overview class on how to read the statements; this is a how to do it class using combining and combined spreadsheets to prepare these statements. Bring your trial balances and laptops to these workshops.

With SAS 112, it is important for you to have a working knowledge of your financial statements. This class will teach you how to prepare your Combined Balance Sheet using Excel templates to complete it for the fall filing. Then you will learn how to tweak the Combined Balance Sheet to prepare your GASB 34 Fund Perspective Statements. By preparing these statements, you will have the template and the knowledge to prepare these statements in subsequent years, while reducing your audit fee permanently going forward. Then we will discuss the Government Wide Statements and the Management's Discussion and Analysis (MD&A). This class is scheduled to prepare your Combined Balance Sheet in September to facilitate timely reporting.

    • Governmental Funds balance sheets, Statement of revenues, expenditures and changes in fund balances, and the Budget to Actual Comparison statements
    • Proprietary Funds Statement of Net Assets, Statement of Revenues, Expenses and Changes in Net Assets, and Statement of Cash Flows
    • Fiduciary Funds Statement of Fiduciary Net Assets and Changes in Fiduciary Net Assets
    • Reconciliations to the government wide statements
  • Overview of GASBS No. 34 Government Wide Statements
    • Statement of Net Assets
    • Statement of Activities
  • Overview of Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A)
